Handel: Messiah

The Messiah is certainly the most emblematic work of the Handelian production for voice, because since its premiere in Dublin in the year 1742 the work won a distinguished place in the universal repertoire, fascinating the audience and musicians with the indisputable power and effect that it provoques on those who listen to it.

The work itself is quite particular for several reasons, the first of which is that Handel uses a text devoid of direct dramatic action, one of its most outstanding features being the text only enunciative of the scriptures of the Bible. The second is the reuse of music from previous works of Handel to build the choirs, especially those of the first part. However, the oratorio is also a source of completely new compositions, demonstrating the versatility of the composer when dealing with the challenges required by the composition of a such large-scale work.

Alain Damas is the tenor soloist on this occasion, performing once again one of his favorite scores, which represents for the tenor a compendium of virtuosity that could be demanded at that time for this voice type: Agile coloratura combined with expressiveness and elegance in the line of singing. Together with the SMR Academy choir and orchestra and conducted by the prestigious conductor Cristóbal Solar, Handel's work will resonate once more on the days: 10th (Iglesia de San Clemente, 18hrs); 15th (Teatro-Auditorio de Cuenca, 20hrs) and 16 (Catedral de Toledo, 19hrs) of December.
