Philip Glass – The Fall of the House of Usher

Philip Glass - The Fall of the House of Usher

Not hear it?—yes, I hear it, and have heard it. Long—long—long—many minutes, many hours, many days, have I heard it—yet I dared not—...

Edgar Allan Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the undisputed treasures of American literature. Considered as much by the critic as by its own author like one of his bests creations, is a suggestive story that has captivated the imagination of the readers since its publication in 1839.

Its influence on the later artistic production is quite noticeable: from the cinematographic adaptations (including the famous film by Roger Corman in 1960, starring Vincent Price), to comic adaptations, countless references in diverse books; television series and Movies; and even musical adaptations, being notorious the unfinished opera by Claude Debussy based on this history.

Thus, it is not surprising that American composer Philip Glass became inspired by this enigmatic story to compose an opera. The minimalist language of Glass' music contributes to create a particular atmosphere of increasing tension throughout the work, which allows the audience to be wrapped in every aspect of a world of appearances where nothing is said openly and much remains in the opinion of the viewer.

However, the sudden death of Madeline will unleash a series of terrible events that will lead to a tragic end.
